Google Sucks Life Out of Old Media: The 2007 advertising share shift

Leaving a fluorescent light on is more efficient than switching it off.
While it is true that there is a power surge when switching on an fluorescent light, this only lasts for a fraction of a second and so, according to the Consumer Energy Centre, if the light is not required for a period of just a few minutes, it is still cheaper and more efficient to turn it off during this time.
